FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to issue 9

Welcome back to The Dispatch. This is the honeymoon issue, for anyone who has just got married, or is about to, and wants the safari part done properly.

Most of the money decisions on a honeymoon come down to timing and privacy, and the marriage certificate turns out to be the most valuable thing you pack.

Newlyweds, probably. Eileen Brown

THE COMPARISON

The Best Safari-and-Beach Combinations in Africa

The classic honeymoon shape is bush first, beach second: you meet the 5am starts fresh and finish on the sand with nothing left to do. Let geography choose the beach. Kenya and Tanzania pair with Zanzibar, a short hop from the Serengeti; Kruger and Botswana pair with Mozambique's Bazaruto islands, through Johannesburg.

Mauritius and the Seychelles are the malaria-free alternative, at a higher price and a longer flight. Split 10 nights roughly in half, never give the beach fewer than 4, and pick a pairing that connects in a single flying day.

THE PLANNING INSIGHT

Honeymoon Safari Planning: The Guide Couples Actually Need

The most valuable line on a honeymoon booking is the wedding date. Many top operators take 40 to 50% off one partner's accommodation for couples travelling within about 6 months of the wedding, which is worth more than every complimentary bottle of bubbly combined.

So build the trip inside that window and carry the certificate, because the good camps check. Then look at the green season, roughly November to April, when the same small camps are quieter and cheaper.

THE TRUTH

What Luxury Actually Buys You on Safari

Honeymooners are the easiest guests to upsell, so know where the extra money goes. Above roughly $1,200 per person per night, most of the premium buys the room, the pool, the design and the name: real pleasures, but ones that sit next to the safari rather than improving it.

What changes the trip costs less than the suite: a better guide, a smaller camp and a private vehicle, so the 2 of you set the pace at every sighting. Spend there first and take the standard room.

THE DEALS BOARD

3 countries and 4 kinds of saving this week: honeymoon pricing in Botswana, free road transfers in Namibia, a 2-lodge combo with flights and a last-minute rate in South Africa.

Two chairs, one river. T. Cunniffe / Wilderness

WILDERNESS (BOTSWANA): HONEYMOON OFFER

Travel within 6 months of the wedding and one spouse gets 50% off their stay at any Wilderness camp, DumaTau in the Linyanti included. New bookings for travel in 2026 and 2027, proof of marriage required, and it combines with Wilderness's Free Flying offer.

Front row, no tickets. Natural Selection

NATURAL SELECTION (NAMIBIA): FREE TRANSFERS

Stay 3 nights or more at Nkasa Linyanti and the return road transfer from Katima Mulilo, Shakawe, Sepupa or Kasane is free, on new bookings to 9 Jan 2027. From NAD 10,495 (about $635) per person per night sharing from 1 Nov, plus conservation fee.

Lunch with a view that moves. Madikwe Hills

SEASONS IN AFRICA (SOUTH AFRICA): 2-LODGE COMBO

Spend 6 nights across 2 of Madikwe Hills, Tuningi, Kings Camp and Leopard Hills and pay for 5, flights included. From R101,000 (about $6,120) per person sharing, 1 Nov to 20 Dec 2026, 6 Jan to 31 May and 1 Nov to 20 Dec 2027.

Dinner by lantern, phones optional. Inzalo

INZALO SAFARI LODGE (SOUTH AFRICA): LAST-MINUTE RATE

Book within 30 days of arrival and a suite at Inzalo, in malaria-free Welgevonden, drops to R11,651 (about $705) per night for 2 sharing, instead of R13,240, to 12 Dec 2026. 5 tented suites, conservation levy R395 per person per night.

ONE LODGE WORTH KNOWING

Tum Tum Treehouse Lodge, Zimbabwe

Coffee, served at canopy level. Imvelo

Tum Tum is Imvelo Safari Lodges' newest camp, opened in 2026 in the remote south-east of Hwange National Park. 4 treehouses sit up in old camelthorn trees above a string of waterholes, each en-suite with sliding glass doors and its own deck, and the 2 king treehouses add an outdoor shower and a separate "eagle's nest" deck.

Imvelo built it as the slow last stop on a Hwange trip: a walk, a drive or rhino tracking in the morning, then the afternoon on your deck while elephants pass below. It is about 45 minutes from Linkwasha airstrip; rates are on request and park fees are extra.

A SPECIAL DISPATCH

A guest list set by the number of beds

Table for two, booked for life. Jabulani

A bush wedding is not a venue hire. It is an exclusive-use booking of a whole lodge for 2 or 3 nights with a wedding package on top, and since most lodges have 8 to 12 rooms, the guest list stops at somewhere between 16 and 30. Thornybush, for one, quotes about R55,000 for its 2026 package, with a lodge booked out for at least 2 nights.

The paperwork is the other surprise. Marrying legally in South Africa as foreigners means a Letter of No Impediment, Home Affairs forms and often an interview, so most couples sign at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in the bush with a celebrant the lodge arranges.

A FINAL NOTE

That's issue 9. If it was useful, forward it to the couple who booked the first romantic-looking lodge they found without asking about the honeymoon rate. If it wasn't, reply and tell me why. I will read it.
